Please Don’t Take My Sunshine Away

He leaned against the fence as he waited patiently for Dr. Kang, a psychologist, to come out of the rehab clinic. It was 5:45 pm, which meant Ji Eun had just finished her therapy session with him. It hadn’t been that long since she voluntarily admitted herself into the place. She’d been there for about a week. That didn’t seem like it was long enough to see any sign of improvement, but he only wished that she was trying.

Youngbae finally heard the footsteps going up the metal staircase. He immediately knew the therapist was about to appear. He turned around and found Dr. Kang walking closer to him with a suitcase in one hand, which probably contained a lot of personal information about his other clients.

“Doc,” he called out softly.

Dr. Kang glanced at him before passing him up. “Youngbae,” he announced.

“How’s she doing?” he questioned curiously. “Is she getting better?”

The doctor exhaled heavily. He knew that good news wasn’t going to fall from his lips. “All I can say is that it’s a slow and long process for an addict to completely recover. It’s only been a week, so she’s still very dependent on those pills. But as long as she continues to participate in our sessions and activities, she’ll start to get better.”

Youngbae was disappointed in his answer. Although the doctor said it in a positive light with a little bit of hope, it didn’t give him any kind of relief. Ji Eun was his life. She was his love. She brought light into his world. But when she’s on those pills, she’s a completely different person. She’s no longer the sweet, innocent Ji Eun he used to know. When she’s on those pills, her heart doesn’t belong to him anymore. He doesn’t even exist to her.

All he wanted to hear was good news. To hear that he’d have his Ji Eun back.
